Led Zeppelin ‘Stairway’ Row Draws Support From IP Professors

A group of intellectual property professors are using a copyright dispute involving Led Zeppelin’s famous “Stairway to Heaven” song to urge the Ninth Circuit to clarify the proof needed to show copyright infringement.

The court should clarify that proof of access to the prior work doesn’t lower the burden to show substantial similarity, the 19 professors said in a friend of the court brief filed July 1 on behalf of Led Zeppelin.

The estate of Spirit band member Randy White filed the suit, alleging Led Zeppelin copied elements of “Stairway to Heaven” from Wolfe’s song “Taurus.”
