Univision Communications Inc. infringed DISH Technologies LLC patents by using technology that adapts the quality of streaming content based on available bandwidth, DISH Technologies alleges in a new lawsuit.

DISH Technologies owns U.S. Patent Nos. 7,818,444, 8,402,156, 9,071,668, and 9,406,564, which it purchased from MOVE Networks Inc. The patents cover technology that creates sets of “streamlets” with different quality bitrates that a playback device can switch between as needed, allowing the client to select a stream with a lower bitrate when the user’s bandwidth is constrained instead of pausing the stream to buffer.
