Dish Network Win on Set-Top Ad Patents Upheld by Federal Circuit

The Federal Circuit on Friday upheld Dish Network Corp.‘s win over parts of two patents related to storing personalized ad data on a set-top box.

The Patent Trial and Appeal Board was correct in holding that claims of Customedia Technologies LLC’s patents were invalid, because they covered the abstract idea of using a computer to deliver targeted ads, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said.

Customedia’s U.S. Patent Nos. 8,719,090 and 9,053,494 cover systems that allow set-top boxes to store broadcaster-transmitted ad data in programmable storage sections that can be leased or sold to advertisers.
