Copyright Office Seeks Input on Boosting News Publishers’ Rights

The Copyright Office wants comments on whether the work of news content publishers should receive more protection as social media platforms continue to profit from sharing it.

Congress asked the agency for a report weighing the effectiveness of existing rights in their content, and whether new protections would be “desirable or appropriate,” an entry in the Federal Register published Tuesday said. The Copyright Office noted recent developments in Europe and Australia pushing for new rights and social media revenue sharing, and posed questions for public comments due Nov. 26.
