Voip-Pal.com Inc.'s complaint alleging that Apple Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. infringed patents related to Internet-based phone call technology can’t survive a motion to dismiss, a federal district court in California rules. Claims of Voip-Pal.com’s patents covered the unpatentable abstract idea of “routing a communication based on characteristics of the participants,” according to the court. Voip-Pal said Apple and Amazon infringed its patents for “Internet Protocol (IP) based communication” using the Internet to place phone calls instead of a traditional telephone network, which covered routing communications between IP-based networks and landlines.
