AU Kuwait Targets American University Trademark, TTAB Ruling (1)

The American University of Kuwait is seeking to reverse an administrative tribunal’s cancellation of its trademark after the American University successfully challenged it as too similar to the latter school’s mark.

AUK—an English-language university in the Middle East unaffiliated with Washington-based American University—also urged the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in its complaint to cancel American University’s trademark registrations. The case tests the boundaries of descriptive and generic marks.
