Apple, Amazon Beat More VoIP Patent Infringement Claims

A complaint alleging that Apple Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. infringed patents related to Internet-based phone call technology couldn’t survive a motion to dismiss, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California ruled Nov. 1.

The relevant claims of Voip-Pal.com Inc.'s patents covered the unpatentable abstract idea of “routing a communication based on characteristics of the participants,” the court said.

Voip-Pal lost a related case against Apple, AT&T Corp., Verizon Wireless Services LLC, and Twitter Inc. in March for similar reasons.
