AMS Rebuffed by Supreme Court in Renesas Light Sensor Fight

The U.S. Supreme Court June 24 declined to consider whether patent law would apply when two American companies reach an agreement over sales that would occur overseas.

AMS AG’s sensor unit, formerly known as Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions, sought to collect patent damages from Renesas’s Intersil over sensors used in Apple’s iPhones.

TAOS claimed Renesas’s Intersil had copied its designs for sensors used in electronic devices to adjust screen brightness and then sought to steal Apple’s business by touting its proximity to Apple’s California headquarters.
