Amazon.com Inc. has lost a bid to invalidate a patent for improving the handling of encrypted communications.
The e-commerce giant failed to show ZitoVault LLC’s patent was covered by a prior invention, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled Nov. 16. on a 2-1 vote. The ruling affirmed a decision by the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.
Amazon challenged the patent after ZitoVault, a Carlsbad, Calif.-based cybersecurity company, sued it for infringement in 2015. Amazon had disputed ZitoVault’s infringement claims in its 2017 annual report and said it would defend itself “vigorously.”
