Amazon Asks Federal Circuit to Nix Patent Suit Against Websites

Amazon.com faced Federal Circuit judges’ skeptical questions on why the court should apply a special procedural rule to protect its web service customers from follow-on patent infringement suits.

Patent owner PersonalWeb Technologies lost a previous case in which it argued Amazon’s web storage services infringed its patents on accessing data files, Amazon told the court at oral arguments Thursday. PersonalWeb shouldn’t be allowed to bring another suit against Amazon’s customers—including Vox, Buzzfeed, and Dictionary.com—for infringement of the same patents, Amazon’s counsel, J. David Hadden of Fenwick & West LLP in Mountain View, Calif., said.
