EU Offers Post-Brexit Value-Added Tax Rules for Northern Ireland

EU rules for value-added tax would continue to apply to goods sold in Northern Ireland after the Brexit transition ends on Dec. 31, under a European Commission proposal on Friday.

The proposed amendment to the European Union’s VAT Directive would give businesses in Northern Ireland a special identification number, the commission said in a statement about the proposal.

  • Under the proposal, “goods sold and transported from Northern Ireland to the EU (and vice-versa) will be treated the same as cross-border supplies of goods within the EU, including for VAT exemptions and deductions.”
