Society Insurance Fails to Ax Virus Claims in Bellwether Cases (1)

A group of bar and restaurant owners notched an early win in their fight with Society Insurance Co. over payouts for pandemic-linked losses, after a federal judge rejected the insurer’s bid to bring the litigation to a swift end.

The owners sufficiently alleged that their insurance policies cover business closures and pared-down service stemming from emergency orders issued to reduce Covid-19’s spread, Judge Edmond E. Chang held Monday, ruling on three “bellwether” cases in a consolidated proceeding against Society Insurance meant to sort out common issues across similar cases.
