Former Community College Basketball Coaches Drop Race Bias Suit

Three former Highland Community College women’s basketball coaches agreed to dismiss their racial discrimination and retaliation suit against the school and its board of trustees.

B.J. Smith, Bradford Zinn, and Jered Ross alleged the school conducted a concerted campaign to “intimidate enrolled Black student-athletes into leaving through systemic harassment based on race” and to coerce its coaches to refrain from recruiting Black athletes. The coaches said they opposed the discriminatory practices, but were suspended and ultimately fired following bogus allegations of National Junior College Athletic Association rules violations, including academic misconduct.
