Coach Fired for Lending Money to Players Loses Sex Bias Claims

A male women’s college basketball coach at an upstate New York community college can’t pursue gender discrimination claims against the school because he failed to show the rationale for firing him—making loans to student-athletes and providing them housing—was a pretext.

Plaintiff Jason Carpenter alleged that his termination from Mohawk Valley Community College in Oneida County, N.Y., for violating the rules of the National Junior College Athletic Association was a ruse that allowed the school to hire a female coach.
