Virginia Abortion Restrictions to Get Another Day in Court

The fate of two Virginia laws restricting who can perform abortions and where second-trimester procedures can take place may be decided by a Richmond federal court shortly.

The first law prohibits anyone other than a licensed physician from performing an abortion. The second requires all second-trimester abortions to take place in licensed hospitals or surgical centers.

Both laws have been in effect for over 40 years, and violators of either are subject to criminal prosecution and civil fines. Judge Henry E. Hudson, of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, will hear arguments on whether they should...
