U.S.: Five New York Doctors Took Payoffs to Prescribe Pain Drug

Five New York doctors were charged with taking more than $800,000 in payoffs cloaked as educational speaker fees to write millions of dollars’ worth of prescriptions for a potent painkiller spray based on the addictive opiate fentanyl.

The drug manufacturer Insys Therapeutics Inc. issued a statement March 19 saying it is “working with relevant authorities to resolve issues related to inappropriate actions taken by former employees.” The statement followed the March 16 unsealing of the charges against the five doctors, along with guilty pleas entered in 2017 by two former Insys sales managers for their roles in the alleged payoff...
