UnitedHealth Beats $37M Lawsuit Over Urine Testing

UnitedHealthcare Insurance Co. defeated a lawsuit by toxicology labs that said the insurer failed to pay more than $37 million for urinalysis testing and other services.

The labs, Mission Toxicology LLC and Sun Clinical Laboratory LLC, lacked standing to accuse UnitedHealth of violating the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, a federal judge said April 20. The benefit assignment forms signed by nearly 10,000 UnitedHealth patients only authorized the labs to sue the insurer for benefits, the judge said.
