Stony Brook Professor Admits Theft of Cancer Research Funding (1)

A former cancer researcher at a Long Island campus of the State University of New York faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to stealing $220,000 in research funds, the Department of Justice said.

The theft by Geoffrey Girnun included grants issued by the National Institutes of Health, the DOJ said in a statement released after the plea hearing Tuesday. He used the money for personal expenses, including payments on his mortgage, prosecutors said.
