State Medicaid Programs Urged to Focus on Non-Medical Needs

Affordable housing, quality education, and other social needs should be a focus of state Medicaid programs as they seek to improve health outcomes among low-income populations, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said Thursday.

The new guidance is part of the CMS’s broader effort to move the U.S. health-care system from a fee-for-service payment model to a value-based system that holds providers accountable for cost and quality, the agency said in a statement.

Current research shows that interventions addressing non-medical needs for Medicaid beneficiaries can result in both improved health and cost savings, the agency said.
