Spinal Implant Maker to Pay $6 Million Over Kickbacks to Surgeons

An Illinois-based maker of spinal implants will pay $5.5 million, and two of its officers will pay another $500,000, to settle claims that the company paid kickbacks to surgeons for the use of its products, the Department of Justice said.

Life Spine Inc. paid millions of dollars in consulting fees, royalties, and fees for the acquisition of intellectual property to surgeons to induce them to use Life Spine’s spinal implants, devices, and equipment, the DOJ said in a Nov. 7 statement.
