Psychiatric hospitals will undergo a new streamlined examination and certification process beginning in March that will merge two current compliance reviews into one.
But an industry group representing the facilities says more work is needed to reduce the high cost of compliance for providers.
Psychiatric hospitals currently must undergo two separate on-site compliance exams. One is conducted by a state agency to check compliance with federal hospital standards, or Conditions of Participation. The other is conducted by an outside contractor to review adherence to additional federal requirements for psychiatric hospitals.
