Rehabilitation facilities for patients coming out of acute care hospitals would be next in line to be paid based on the quality of care they provide under a model being developed by a Medicare advisory panel.
The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission’s uniform, value-based payment proposal would apply to the four settings that provide post-acute care: nursing homes, in-home care, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, and long-term acute care hospitals.
Patients are typically transferred to a post-acute care setting for recovery after an acute illness or injury when they are no longer in critical condition but need continued care and monitoring.
