Option to Buy Medicaid Gains Steam With New Statehouses

Allowing people who can’t get Obamacare subsidies to buy their way into Medicaid is gaining popularity after more Democratic governors and state legislators were elected.

Health-care providers worry that they’ll suffer if that happens because they get paid less for Medicaid patients than others. Health insurers fear they’ll lose business if people are allowed to buy into Medicaid at cheaper rates than individual health insurance plans.

“If everybody shifts over to Medicaid, what’s going to happen to the provider base?” Catherine O’Mara, executive director of the Nevada State Medical Association, told Bloomberg Law.
