Ohio’s Kasich Vetoes One Abortion Bill, Signs Another

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) signed an abortion law that critics say will bar the most common second trimester procedure, but vetoed another bill that would have banned abortions on fetuses with a heartbeat.

Kasich signed a bill Dec. 21 that would impose civil and criminal penalties on doctors who perform a dilation and evacuation procedure, which dismembers a fetus before stopping its heartbeat. The ACLU claims the bill would essentially ban abortions following the 14th week of pregnancy because physicians fear complications women could face from unnecessary steps used to kill a fetus before the abortion procedure.
