Ohio House Passes ‘Heartbeat’ Abortion Ban

The Ohio House passed a bill banning abortions if a fetus possesses a detectable heartbeat, a measure that would prohibit abortion procedures as soon as six weeks into pregnancy.

The Nov. 15 vote means the legislation is likely to head to Gov. John Kasich’s (R) desk for the second time. Kasich vetoed a similar bill in 2016 over concerns that courts have found other states’ "heartbeat bills” unconstitutional, and he has said he would veto the measure again to save legal fees the state would incur in an inevitable court loss.
