NYC Bars Unvaccinated Students at Schools in High Measles Area

The New York City Health Department barred unvaccinated students from Orthodox Jewish religious schools in a Brooklyn area with rapidly growing numbers of measles cases.

The action, announced April 8 by city Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot, follows a state court decision temporarily blocking a broader measles emergency declaration in suburban Rockland County, N.Y. Health officials have tied measles outbreaks in Brooklyn and Rockland County to contagion within ultra-Orthodox religious communities.

The measles outbreak in the city’s Orthodox Jewish community now stands at 285 cases since October, versus 167 cases in Rockland County.
