North Carolina Democrats are renewing their efforts to expand the state’s Medicaid program, a move that would provide hundreds of thousands of people with coverage.
Companion bills (S.B. 3 and H.B. 5) were among the first bills introduced for consideration during the new legislative session. Past attempts to expand Medicaid have failed in North Carolina, but Democrats gained some seats in the 2018 elections.
Although Republicans no longer have a veto-proof majority, the GOP still holds most of the seats in both chambers, and its leadership continues to resist expansion efforts.
