Neurosurgeon Pleads Guilty to Fraud,
Unnecessary Surgeries, Kickback Charges

A Birmingham, Mich., neurosurgeon pleaded guilty May 22 to charges he performed unnecessary spinal surgeries on patients and defrauded Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance companies of more than $11 million, and that he paid kickbacks to surgeons in exchange for using medical devices provided by a distributorship he co-owned (United States v. Sabitplea agreement).
