Missouri Retreats From Medicaid Expansion Without Funding (1)

Missouri’s Department of Social Services won’t carry out a voter-approved Medicaid expansion after the state legislature declined to fund the initiative, Gov. Mike Parson said Thursday.

The state lacks authority to expand the joint federal-state health program because the ballot measure didn’t include a funding mechanism, and the legislature refused to provide funding, Parson (R) said in a statement.

The announcement comes less than a week after the legislature finished up work on the state’s $35 billion budget for fiscal 2022. It sets up an almost certain legal showdown between the state and people who became eligible for Medicaid ...
