Missouri Refuses to Fund Voter-Approved Medicaid Expansion

The issue of Medicaid expansion in Missouri appears headed for the courthouse after the state Senate voted to reject funding for the program.

Missouri voters approved a constitutional amendment in August 2020 expanding eligibility for the low-income health insurance program to include able-bodied adults, with a firm start date of July 1.

But both chambers of the General Assembly refused during the current legislative session to provide funds to cover the cost of the new entitlement, raising the question of what will happen when newly eligible people attempt to enroll.
