Minority Women Left Out of Reproductive Health Treatments

Women of color most at risk for cervical cancer caused by HPV and for postpartum depression will be underrepresented in the FDA’s reproductive health efforts because they lack access to necessary OB/GYN screenings.

Nearly half of women of color in low-income areas of the U.S. don’t have access to basic OB/GYN screenings that could identify the virus that’s a main cause of cervical cancer or evaluate them for symptoms of depression after giving birth.

That means the Food and Drug Administration’s efforts to expand womens’ treatment options for postpartum depression and to eliminate human papillomavirus infections won’t reach minority women...
