Medicare Chief, Watchdog at Odds Over ‘Error-Prone’ Providers

A government watchdog agency wants the Trump administration to take action against 100 “error-prone” care providers who were found to receive high rates of improper Medicare payments.

A report released Tuesday by the HHS Office of Inspector General called on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to “take specific action against these providers “such as prior authorization, prepayment reviews, and post-payment reviews.” The OIG also asks the CMS to “apply additional program integrity tools” to providers “that have an increased risk of receiving improper payments” based on CMS audit data.
