Liver Transplant Policy Appeal Must Proceed, Organ Group Says

Many people who might be saved will die if a federal appeals court delays a suit over the federal government’s new liver transplant allocation policy, an organization charged with implementing the policy said.

The delay in implementing the new U.S. Health and Human Services Department policy has cost at least 30 lives so far, the United Network for Organ Sharing told the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

A lower court order would have allowed the new policy to take effect, but it later blocked the policy pending appellate review, UNOS said. The appeals court should therefore proceed...
