Newly elected Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly recommends setting aside $14 million in the state’s budget for an expansion of Medicaid, but whether the Republican-controlled Legislature will follow through is still unknown.
In her State of the State address, Kelly (D) said that up to 30 percent of the state’s hospitals are considered financially vulnerable, and are at “serious” risk of closure. One way to combat these looming closures is to expand KanCare—the state’s Medicaid program—"to help keep these important facilities stay open and provide affordable health care to 150,000 more Kansans—no matter where they live.”
