Judge Blocks Georgia ‘Fetal Heartbeat’ Abortion Ban For Now (1)

Georgia’s ban on abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected—estimated to occur about six weeks into a pregnancy—won’t go into effect as scheduled, after a federal judge agreed Oct. 1 to temporarily block the new law.

The restriction would have taken effect Jan. 1, after Gov. Brian Kemp (R) signed H.B. 481 into law in May. It mirrored “fetal heartbeat” abortion bans enacted by a handful of other states this year, including Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Ohio. Each one faces litigation that challenges the bans as unconstitutional.

Missouri has an eight-week ban, and Utah and Arkansas have adopted 18-week bans. ...
