California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is likely to sign bills creating a state-level individual insurance mandate and expansion of Medicaid benefits to undocumented adults up to age 26.
Lawmakers sent the bills to Newsom June 24 as part of an overall budget package for the fiscal year that begins July 1. He has 10 days to sign them. The bills are part of Newsom’s push toward universal health coverage in California to counter efforts by the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress to chip away at the Affordable Care Act.
