House Moves to End Hurdle for Prescribing Addiction Medication

Advocates for expanding the use of anti-addiction medications got a major win Wednesday as the House passed legislation to ease doctors’ ability to prescribe such medicines.

The House voted 402-20 in favor of the bill (H.R. 7666). The legislation is a collection of mental health and addiction bills from both Democrats and Republicans meant to bolster the nation’s response to its growing mental health crisis, supporters say. A key provision would allow doctors to prescribe buprenorphine, used to treat opiate addiction, without the need for a waiver from the Drug Enforcement Administration.
