HHS Moves to Ease Sharing of Substance Use Treatment Records (1)

Doctors will be able to more readily get consent from patients to share their substance use treatment records under a policy the HHS finalized Monday.

The regulation will let patients consent to their information being shared with specific entities—like insurers, the Social Security Administration, and others—rather than having to name certain people at these institutions, whom they may not know.

“This reform will help make it easier for Americans to discuss substance use disorders with their doctors, seek treatment, and find the road to recovery,” Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a statement.
