Governor Wants Illinois Medicaid to Cover Transgender Surgery

A first-term Illinois state House Republican wants to stop Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) from expanding the state’s Medicaid program to cover transgender sex reassignment surgery.

State Rep. Darren Bailey (R), a member of the state House Appropriations-Human Services Committee, announced April 8 he will introduce legislation to prohibit the state’s Department of Healthcare and Family Services from enacting a rule to include gender-affirming surgery in the state’s Medicaid program. Democrats control both chambers of the Illinois Legislature, so Bailey’s legislation, not yet introduced, will need bipartisan support. And it will need to survive a likely Pritzker veto.
