Florida Doctor Charged in $121 Million Drug-Testing Scheme

A Florida doctor was charged Friday with orchestrating a drug-testing scheme that bilked Medicare and private insurers out of $121 million, the Department of Justice said.

Michael J. Ligotti allegedly enabled more than 50 addiction treatment facilities, where he acted as medical director, to bill for hundreds of millions of dollars in unnecessary drug and alcohol tests, the DOJ said in a statement.

Ligotti also billed for unnecessary drug treatments at his clinic, including some that were never given, the agency alleged.
