‘Fetal Heartbeat’ Abortion Ban Nears Georgia Governor’s Desk

A Georgia proposal to ban abortions when a fetal heartbeat is detected moved a step closer to becoming state law March 22 as the state Senate passed the bill, 34-18. The vote came one day after Mississippi enacted a similar ban.

Georgia is one of several states this year pushing to ban abortions as early as six weeks into a pregnancy, perhaps in hopes of urging the U.S. Supreme Court to revisit or overturn constitutional protections of abortion rights.
