Employers See Some Relief as Health Spending Continues to Rise

The sharply rising cost of health care for employers and their workers is showing signs of moderating, according to an organization that tracks spending in employer-sponsored health plans.

Total health-care spending by employers and about 40 million employees and family members grew 4.4% in 2018, to an all-time high of $5,892 per person, slightly higher than 4.2% growth in 2017 and the third consecutive year of growth above 4%, the Health Care Cost Institute report said. Annual out-of-pocket spending for consumers increased 3.8% to $907.
