Employer Coverage Fuels Rise in High-Deductible Health Plans

Enrollment in high-deductible health plans continued to rise in 2018, and the share of people with savings accounts to pay those pricey deductibles and other medical expenses rose significantly.

In the first nine months of 2018, 45.6 percent of people under age 65 with private insurance were enrolled in health plans that had annual deductibles of at least $1,350 for individuals and $2,700 a year for families, according to a report released Feb. 27 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That was up from 43.7 percent throughout 2017.
