Efforts to Ease Doctor Fraud Law May Fall Short, Lawyers Warn

Federal regulators may not go as far as some hope in relaxing a law that doctors and hospitals believe is standing in the way of better care for Medicare patients, health law attorneys say.

The Stark law, also known as the physician self-referral law, prohibits doctors from referring Medicare patients to a hospital or other health-care facility if the doctor or an immediate member of his or her family has a financial stake in that facility.
