Chicago Sun-Times Wins Access to Walk-In Gunshot Patient Data

The federal patient health-care privacy law doesn’t prohibit a public hospital from disclosing the years in which it treated “walk-in” gunshot-wound patients, so long as other patient-identifying information remains confidential, the Illinois Supreme Court said.

The decision means the Chicago Sun-Times may access the years in which an estimated 2,000 gunshot patients, unaccompanied by law enforcement officers, sought care from the Cook County Health and Hospitals System. The system also must disclose the years in which it reported the walk-ins to the police, the court said.
