Democrats in California’s state legislature want to enact a “Medicare for All"-style health-care system, but face resistance from within their own party as the measure comes up for a key vote in the coming week.

Lawmakers soon will vote on a bill (A.B. 1400) to create a “CalCare” state-run health program that backers say would make traditional employer-provided health plans obsolete.

Business groups and legislative Republicans oppose the proposal. But the biggest hurdle for proponents may be their fellow Democrats.
