California Bars Steering Dialysis Patients to Private Insurance

California legislation aimed at curbing practices by dialysis providers including DaVita Inc. and Fresenius Medical Care North America became law.

The Service Employees International Union for the third time in two years targeted dialysis providers, which organized labor and the insurance industry contend steer patients to private insurance. Private insurance pays providers more than public programs such as Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program, so the centers profit from higher reimbursement rates and patients’ out-of-pocket charges, a Senate analysis said.
