Autism Continues Into Adulthood—So Should Insurance: Advocates

Advocates for people with autism have had success this year in convincing state legislatures to mandate broader health coverage despite pushback from insurance companies.

New York, Utah, and Virginia have expanded access by removing age limits on coverage of autism-related conditions or requiring Medicaid to cover the treatment.

But New Mexico went the furthest. Central to a law it passed in April is that adults have access to applied behavior analysis, which advocates consider the gold standard treatment for children. The state’s comprehensive approach also says insurers can’t put dollar limits on that coverage.
