Arkansas Says Danger, Bias Justify Abortion Restrictions

Arkansas has a valid interest in requiring physicians who perform abortions to be board-certified or board-eligible obstetrician-gynecologists, the state told a federal court July 17.

It wants the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas to allow it to enforce the ob-gyn requirement, a prohibition on abortions performed solely because the fetus has been diagnosed with Down Syndrome, and a ban on abortions after the 18th week of pregnancy.
