More than 200,000 Virginians are starting 2019 under the state’s expanded Medicaid program, with health coverage that took effect Jan 1.
As of New Year’s Day, 202,182 newly eligible Virginians joined more than 1 million residents already covered by Virginia Medicaid before the expansion. The state started accepting applications under expanded Medicaid rules Nov. 1.
Initial estimates predicted 300,000 to 400,000 new low-income residents would enroll in Virginia Medicaid in 2019. Enrollment is open year round, a strategy recommended by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid services to encourage participation.
